For over 40 years, David Wainwright has been working closely with the beekeepers of northwest Zambia, preserving an ancient tradition of beekeeping in harmony with nature. In these untouched forests, bark hives are still hung high in trees, out of reach of honey badgers and army ants. Wild swarms fill the hives with aromatic honey, which is harvested by hand after a year or two, when the beekeepers climb the trees and crop the honey, ensuring the bees are left with enough for themselves.
This unique honey isn't just about rich, full-bodied flavour—it's a symbol of a thriving village economy. Young people in the area are now benefiting from beekeeping, ensuring more hives, more bees, and better pollination for the forest.
